The negative trends of lack of access to safe water drinking water by 277 million people and 1.7 Billion people lacking access to improved sanitation are a result of over extraction of water to meet the needs, deforestation, drought and floods and about 70% to 90% of wastewater being discharged untreated into fresh water bodies.

The positive trends are the significant growth of people able to access safe drinking water which grew by 20% from 1990 to 2015 and access to basic sanitation also grew by 21% in the same period.
